Scott Wilson, P.Eng.

Owner & President

Responsible Officer

Education & Experience:

Scott’s engineering journey began in 1998 and has since grown into a 25+ year wealth of experience. He initially obtained a bachelor’s degree in forestry from UBC Vancouver in 1996. Due to his interest in engineering, he continued his studies in the UBC Civil Engineering Department and became an E.I.T. Scott’s first job as an EIT in 1998 was under Frank Baumann, a geotechnical engineer out of Squamish who introduced him to retaining wall design, landslide assessments (including rockfall) and road deactivation prescriptions.

Scott later moved into the forest industry after his work with Baumann and continued Forestry Engineering work in the 1990’s. Over the years he primarily focused on the engineering of transportation systems and harvest block layout, including bridge general arrangement design and road deactivation. During this work, he learned to identify unstable slopes in the field. He was also introduced to bridge inspection work.

From 2000-2002, Scott worked in Northern California doing forestry engineering. He was also an integral part of a geohazard project in Northern California working under the guidance of a seasoned geologist. During this 7_ month initiative, he successfully classified 48,200ha of private forest land for geohazard risks utilizing techniques such as aerial photo interpretation to identify relict and active slides, and ground-truthing to validate findings. This hands-on experience not only honed his skills in geohazard assessment but also developed his proficiency in reading geological maps and identifying soils and rocks, laying a solid foundation in geohazard engineering and geomorphology.

Scott returned to school in 2002 and obtained a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa. He continued graduate study and obtained a master’s degree (Mechanical) at Carleton. His aerospace engineering studies sharpened his analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

He then joined the Canadian Armed Forces as an engineering officer for 3 years and gained practical knowledge in engineering. His time in the armed forces added to a robust foundation in engineering fundamentals and judgement, reinforced by hands-on experience. Moreover, the strong work ethic and discipline cultivated during his military service remain vital to his engineering practice, empowering him to consistently produce innovative, effective and reliable solutions.

He returned to engineering consulting in BC in 2012, initially working for a forestry consultant in Prince George, under the supervision of Bob Parolin, P.Eng. Under his supervision they designed roads for the Site C project and performed geohazard assessments. He also did general road and bridge design, as well as geohazard assessments in the forest industry.

After leaving Prince George, Scott worked for several consultants in the forest engineering field which furthered his forestry and geotechnical skills. He obtained his P.Eng. certification in 2014.

In 2017, Scott took the bold step of establishing his own business (OCTO) and work for himself, (continuing the practices of forestry, geotechnical and structural engineering), leveraging the expertise and confidence gained from his engineering education and extensive industry experience accumulated through many years of dedication and perseverance. Scott was driven by his strong belief in his ability to excel and make meaningful impact in his field.

Beyond his engineering endeavors, he dedicates his free time to more profound pursuits, including writing articles on mathematics and physics. Notably, his work was recently published in the London Journals of Physics, a testament to his remarkable abilities.
